Gurmit Kor, founder of KOR Institute of Music GK
FOUNDED BY

Gurmit Kor.

I started teaching the raags the Gurus composed in 1998 — a Hindustani classical inheritance that the Guru Granth Sahib itself preserves deserve a school. Twenty-five years later, every one of those raags is still taught here.

Gurmit Kor is the founder and principal teacher at KOR. His students — from Surrey and across the Lower Mainland — have gone on to perform kirtan at gurdwaras, compete internationally, and pass the tradition to their own children.

Programs

Four ways to learn.

i.

Gurmat Sangeet

The music of the Guru Granth Sahib — the foundational cycle of raags used in kirtan. The school's signature program.

ii.

Hindustani Foundations

Hindustani vocal and instrumental foundations — raga architecture, tala, aaroha-avroha to advanced bandish — taught as discipline in service of Gurmat Sangeet. The raags the Gurus composed sit inside this wider Hindustani tradition, so we teach the foundations our kirtan students need to carry a shabad with authority.

iii.

Instrument Studies

Tabla, harmonium, dilruba, taus, sitar & more. One-on-one weekly instruction with lineage-aware pedagogy.

iv.

Kirtan & Performance

Group practice and stage preparation for students ready to lead kirtan at gurdwaras and community events.

What students say
My grandfather sang kirtan his whole life. When he passed, I wanted to learn the raags properly. Gurmit-ji didn't just teach me the notes — he taught me why my grandfather sang them.
